The Occupation Permit (OP) serves as both a work and residence permit, enabling foreign nationals to both live and work in Mauritius within three distinct categories, namely: 1. Investor; 2. Professional 3. Self-Employed.

Since January 2022, the Government of Mauritius has introduced several initiatives aimed at attracting foreigner to reside and work on the island. Investor

Normal category

The Investor is required to make an initial investment of USD 50,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency, investors are eligible to proceed, contingent upon the submission of the required documentation.

Net Asset Value

For existing businesses and those inherited, the eligibility criteria include a net asset value of a minimum USD 50,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency. Additionally, a cumulative turnover of at least 12 million rupees (approx. USD 270,000 or EUR 240,000) during the three years preceding the application is required.

High Technology Machines & Equipment

Initial investment of USD 50,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency. To kickstart the process, a minimum transfer of USD 25,000 is required within 60 days of receiving the occupation permit (conditions apply). The remaining value to can be allocated to high technology machines and equipment subject to specific criteria.

Investor for Innovative start-ups with no investment

This scheme is designed for investors engaged in Research and Development (R&D) within qualifying sectors. These sectors encompass, but are not limited to, life and health sciences, technology, ICT, fintech, biotechnology, nano technology, light manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and design.

An Occupation Permit (OP) under the Investor category is initially granted for a maximum period of ten years. Subsequent renewals are subject to meeting the established criteria.

Professional

Mauritius has consistently embraced professionals and foreign talents, fostering a welcoming environment. A Professional is required to earn a Monthly Basic Salary of at least MUR 30,000 (approx. EUR640 or US$700) under a contract of employment specifying the duration of employment or for a period of 10 years, whichever is lesser. The Professionals can opt for a Short-term Occupation Permit lasting up to 9 months. An extension is possible but limited to a single renewal for a maximum period of 3 months.

A holder of an occupation permit as a non-citizen professional is allowed to invest in any business in Mauritius subject to certain conditions. He/she may also hold shares in a company provided he/she is not a majority shareholder.

Young Professional Occupation Permit

Mauritius is expanding its progress by welcoming foreign students who have completed their tertiary education in the country to join its job market. These individuals qualify for an Occupation Permit lasting up to three years, contingent upon the length of their employment contract.

Self-Employed

A Self-Employed individual is a non-citizen either registered with the Registrar of Businesses under the Business Registration Act or operating as a one-person company. Family Occupation Permit

Through the Family Occupation Permit, individuals such as the applicant, their spouse, dependent children, parents, and other designated dependents, or those exclusively employed for the family unit, can apply to become residents of Mauritius for a duration of 10 years.

Both the applicant and their spouse are granted permission to work and/or invest in Mauritius.

To qualify for the Family Occupation Permit, you will need to make a contribution of USD250,000 or its equivalent in convertible foreign currency to the COVID-19 Project Fund.
